One Word That Improves All Leaders

Love. This word can mean a lot of different things to people. For many of us, it has deep roots that take us back to our childhood, current and past relationships, and even the media bombards us with mixed messages about love. Here is what I know – our ability to show love as leaders is the secret sauce for the performance and health of our teams. This one word improves all leaders, no matter where they are in an organization. First, let’s make sure we get back to the root definition of love. The ancient Greeks had several words to describe the different kinds of “love.” Eros is the term describing the love around physical touching and sex. That is not the love we are talking about here! The Greeks had two additional words to define love, and today I want to focus on them: agape and phileo. Agape is a selfless universal love for all,

STOP Going Through The Motions in Quarterlies: 3 Tips to Make Them Matter

I’ve facilitated hundreds of quarterlies throughout my EOS career. It’s pretty obvious when a leader is going through the motions of EOS but isn’t pushing it to its full potential. You follow the agenda (or not), or you focus on getting things done vs listening to all the voices in the room. If you’re ready to take your quarterlies to the next level, here are a couple tips that may help you charge the time together with things like gratitude, vulnerability, hope and team health. Tip #1: Cascade Recognition Recognition starts with the key check-in questions: What’s working? What’s not working? This is where we ask our leaders to step back and talk about some of the wins and who was behind them. If someone’s hard work gets mentioned/celebrated — especially someone who isn’t in the room — make sure they hear about it! We all like to be recognized for

What running a marathon taught me about running on EOS

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” – James Clear, author of Atomic Habits For the record, I am not a distance runner. When it comes to running, I was built for sprinting, not long distance. But I picked up running several years ago because I enjoy it. I do not run for any particular purpose nor with any plan, other than it is my mental health time. I run for clarity, not distance. Although, some days it just takes longer. Running a Half Marathon – without a System In 2020, I had a goal to run 1,300 miles, about half the width of the United States and roughly a marathon’s worth of mileage per week. As a part of that plan, I ran the Columbus half marathon, having done no real training nor any formal preparation. I finished

What Do Top Performers Do

Habits of Top Performers Recently I was listening to a very interesting podcast interview between my favorite go-to internet medical professional: Peter Attia MD and Lewis Howes.   They had a wide-ranging but in depth discussion, and touched on the subject of top performers, coaches and what coaching does. Lewis is a former professional athlete and has a deep passion around studying the habits of top performers to distill what it is they do that drives their success. He has interviewed a lot of world class athletes from Kobe Bryant to Novak Djokovic and Olympic gold medalists. The habits he found in these top performers that have driven their success are: All great athletes who succeed have expert coaches to support them. When top athletes get to the top, they don’t just rest there and stop. They hire more elite coaches when they’re at the top to continue to sustain their success

Chat GPT weighs in on Entrepreneurialism and describes what Running On EOS® feels like.

Chat GPT weighs in on the meaning of Entrepreneurialism and describes what Running On EOS feels like in the process. What Chat GPT says about Entrepreneurism.– Oddly, really summarizes what it feels like to be part of a company running on EOS®. A great reminder about EOS® as a Trust building program that encourages employees to act like entrepreneurs. I received a copy of this email from EOS Client Lee Walker – Lee is the millennial CEO of Walker Auto and Truck – 600+ employees, 70 Auto parts stores. I asked Lee if I could share what he wrote. He said cool. Lee writes: Subject: “Dust yourself off and try again” Light Bulb – Re: May Store Manager Meeting Morning Leaders – I heard this song on my drive this morning. (sadly I thought it was Beyonce but it is Aaliyah). A light bulb switched on… what we are really focusing

Do I really need EOS® top to bottom?

Most clients ask this question at some point. After all, using EOS for the leadership team makes sense. The leadership team sets the strategic direction. The leadership team drives the entire business, so using EOS to drive alignment, coordination and efficiency makes sense. People on the manufacturing floor or the laborers in the field or the housekeepers in the hotel just need to execute the plan. Do they really need to learn all this EOS stuff? Or, similar thinking along this line. We answer with a loud and definitive “Yes!” We need every employee fully aligned, disciplined, accountable and excited. This will build the greatest companies. Employees cannot fulfill expectations unless they know their role How can anyone excel at their job if they do not know what they are expected to do? The first and most fundamental question lies in ensuring the employee understands their role. A simple question
