Why Core Values Sometimes Miss

We’ve all seen the beautifully designed posters in the lobby (done it), the prominently featured section on the “About Us” page (built it), the carefully crafted list of words that promise to define a company’s soul (sure did). I’m talking about core values. Yet, despite their ubiquity, “core values” can elicit an eye-roll or a cynical sigh. If the goal of creating core values is only for use on your website, then they can get a reputation for being “fluffy,” aspirational platitudes disconnected from the daily reality of the workplace. But why can these seemingly well-intentioned declarations sometimes fail to deliver? I believe the failure of creating (non)core values stems from several critical, often overlooked, missteps. It’s not that the idea of core values is flawed; it’s how they’re typically conceived, communicated, and, most importantly, lived (or not lived). Let’s break down why core values often fall flat: 1. A conversation with Jen and Kara, founders of ModLink an All-in-One Solution to Simplify & Elevate digital brands for multi-venture women entrepreneurs. In a time when many businesses are struggling to do more with less, the ModLink team is proving that lean doesn’t mean losing sight of the big picture. As a multi-venture founder and creative force behind a growing brand, Jen and Kara share how EOS®, AI, and strong leadership rhythms have helped them scale with purpose and clarity. As someone who’s walked alongside their EOS journey, I can tell you: there’s something powerful that happens when a Visionary and Integrator are truly locked in step with their systems and in vulnerability based trust. False Dichotomy: Leadership > Management

The idea that “leadership” is inherently good and “management” is inherently bad, or at least a lesser function, seems like a common misconception across many platforms… LinkedIn especially. I believe this to be a false dichotomy of sorts, and it’s perpetuated by several factors. Oversimplification and Romanticization of Leadership: Leadership is often associated with grand visions, inspiration, innovation, and positive change. It conjures images of charismatic individuals who motivate people to achieve extraordinary things. This romanticized view makes “leadership” seem aspirational and noble. Association of Management with Bureaucracy and Control: In contrast, “management” is often linked to processes, systems, rules, efficiency, and maintaining the status quo. This can sometimes be perceived as rigid, uncreative, and even stifling. When management is poorly executed, it can indeed lead to micromanagement, lack of autonomy, and demotivation, reinforcing a negative stereotype. Focus on “What” vs. “How”: Some common distinctions, like Peter Drucker’s “Management is

In business, growth doesn’t come from volume—it comes from traction. Much like prospecting for gold, the value is in knowing where to dig, what to look for, and when to walk away.
