Hei Hei the Chicken Terrorist

Have you ever worked with someone who was a real suck-up when the boss was around, but after she disappeared, he would be mean and nasty to the rest of the team?  It’s like working with two different people, neither of them particularly enjoyable. It appears I had this situation with my rooster, Hei Hei.  After my experience with Oden, my late mean rooster, I thought Hei Hei was a great rooster.  I was able to enter the coop without fear of him flogging me, I could tend to the food and water without worrying about his whereabouts, and when I did approach him, he would run away, not fly towards me like Oden did. A month or so ago, Mike started suggesting that we should get rid of Hei Hei.  We had plenty of peeps, so his “services” weren’t needed any longer, and the 4:30 AM crowing was getting old.  But, I kept

Annual Planning: Beware of Sharks!

During the journey of implementing EOS in their business, it’s common for my clients to become skilled handling day-to-day issues. Unfortunately, some issues are out of sight like sharks. They’re swimming in the water, and we don’t notice until they bite. The 2-day Annual Planning session, particularly the SWOT analysis, is critical to preparing for and avoiding these sharks that lurk beneath the surface. 2020-2022 taught us that by thinking about business risk and prioritizing which ones might affect us most, we can be proactive with steps to make our business resilient. In “The Infinite Game”, Simon Sinek says “A stable organization is one that can weather a storm and come out the same as it was before. A resilient organization can use the storm to go faster than ever”. In the Annual we do a SWOT analysis to evaluate Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. We use this analysis to

How Workaholics Can Be Healthy!

If you’re an entrepreneurial leader, if you are like most of us, you work long and hard and friends or family may have accused you of being a workaholic. Contrary to generally accepted beliefs about work research indicates that what one might call workaholism for some people is actually healthy (I’m so happy to be able to justify my long hours and not have to attend workaholics anonymous)! Researchers in this study evaluated two groups of employees, both of which worked many extra hours. Researchers labeled one group the workaholics. Employees in this group worked long hours but were disengaged and disliked their work. Researchers labeled the other group the long-hours group. Its members also worked long hours but were engaged and enjoyed their work. For some of us, we even love our work! Methods. Researchers evaluated 763 employees using biomarkers that indicate health risks such as high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels. Results. To my surprise and delight, the long-hours

Fear of Failure’s 7 Faces

I surveyed successful founders of entrepreneurial companies in one of my workshops. Amazingly I found that 100 percent of them wanted more courage and confidence in at least some situations, and 100 percent knew they had fears that were blocking their success. They later stated it was a relief to know that all their colleagues had fears … and they weren’t alone. Does it help you to know that you aren’t alone and that highly successful entrepreneurs experience this as well? One of the most common fears that blocks the success of entrepreneurs, other business leaders, and sales professionals is fear of failure. Let’s examine fear of failure’s seven different faces and how to resolve them. Seven Faces of Fear of Failure Fear of failure is one of the most common fears I encounter when helping leaders through their blocks to success. It’s a tricky fear though, because it has

The Importance of Proper Employee Compensation

The Importance of Proper Employee Compensation  When it comes to implementing EOS, there are three important questions to be asked: Is this going to help the company increase its profit? Is this going to help the company be successful? And is this going to make the workforce happy? When asking these questions, it’s important to approach them from both a company’s point of view and an employee’s. There is not a one-size-fits-all answer for these questions, but there are a wide variety of ways to incentivize employees to perform better, which in turn betters the company. Everyone responds to compensation differently, but no matter the preferred method of compensation, everyone wants to be paid for the value they add. Under the compensation umbrella, there are intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, and both are equally important. Intrinsic rewards include things like having a great boss that you feel motivated to work hard
