Discipline

Being your own boss is great, right? You get to call the shots and chase those big, exciting ideas. But sometimes, that freedom can be a trap. Think about those to-do lists – do they always get tackled, or do some things keep getting bumped? What about team meetings? Are they always sharp and focused, or do they wander off track? These little things can slow everything down without you even realizing it. Discipline isn’t about being a robot; it’s about having just enough structure to make the business take off. When everything is humming in a business, you can feel it. There’s a clear sense of what needs to get done and who’s doing it. There is a clear focus and distractions are minimal.  People are operating on the same page, so there are fewer mistakes and less wheel-spinning. You’ll notice that when someone says they’ll do something, it

Hyrox Houston Lessons Beyond the Gym

If I‘ve learned anything about myself, it’s that I perform best when I have a challenge ahead. Goals drive me to push myself. In 2023, I trained to hike Mount Kilimanjaro. I lost weight, built muscle, increased endurance, and hiked at altitude. I was in pretty good shape. Once I returned from Africa, I became complacent. I gained a few pounds and wasn’t pushing as hard in my workouts. I needed a goal on the calendar—a Rock, perhaps—to refocus my efforts. At the end of 2024, I was at the gym when one of the trainers, Tanner, mentioned a fitness event in Houston. The conversation went something like this: Tanner: “A few of the trainers are doing Hyrox in Houston in March. You should come with us.”Me: “OK, I’m in. Send me the link.”Tanner: “Done.”Me: “Cool, I signed up. By the way… what is a Hyrox?” What I Learned? This

Built to Last: Why Blue-Collar Businesses Thrive With EOS®

A construction business owner recently came to us after he had previously been part of a $300 million organization that grew too fast and too furious, eventually collapsing. He knew he couldn’t make that same mistake again with his new organization and was looking for a better way. Fast-forward to post-vision building after three days with his leadership team and he told me, “Patrick, we’ve done more planning and created a stronger vision and plan in three days than we ever did in multiple years with my previous company. You’ve been able to take everything I’ve been thinking in my head since we started this company only a year ago and clarify it now for our entire organization to see and execute.” And that’s the magic of EOS®! Everyday, I work with businesses across every industry—from high-tech startups to multimillion-dollar banks. But if you ask us who some of our

“Our culture is broken” — what can we do to change it?

A client said to me the other day: “Our culture is broken. We need to make big changes to be able to execute our plan” It’s not the first time I’ve heard that. And I get it — culture can feel like this vague, sticky, emotional thing that no one quite knows how to shift. If you listen to culture expert Jon Katzenbach, you might think it’s almost impossible. He’s famous for saying : “You can’t change culture directly. Culture changes when people start to change their behaviours and those behaviours are reinforced by others around them.” And he’s right — mostly. But here’s the thing:Most of Katzenbach’s work is based on huge, complex organisations — Fortune 500s, multi-layered corporations with thousands of employees. What about small and mid-sized businesses? In my experience, yes — you absolutely can change culture. And if you’re running on EOS, you’ve got the tools to

The Accountability Advantage: Build a Team That Delivers

“My team knows what to do. They just aren’t doing it.” As a business owner, how many times have you thought this to yourself or even said it out loud? You’ve hired good people, created detailed plans, and set clear expectations. Yet somehow, tasks still fall through the cracks, deadlines get missed, and promises go unfulfilled. Many leaders look around and realize no one is accountable for accomplishing their tasks. They wonder how they can create the accountability to build a team that delivers? After helping many companies throughout West Michigan implement the Entrepreneurial Operating System® (EOS®), I’ve learned most leaders don’t have an accountability problem. They have a system problem. I know because I’ve been there. Before discovering EOS, I led a team of over 650 people, and despite having talented individuals, we struggled with consistent execution. Back then, I didn’t understand that creating accountability isn’t about trying harder—it’s about
