I hated the trade my dad taught me. I ended up building a company to $35 million.
Here’s what happened.
My dad was an electrician. He ran a two man shop, and my mom kept the books out of the home office where I did my homework. He’d drag me out to job sites to teach me the trade, and I’d spend Florida summers sweating through installing outlets and switches.
I wanted nothing to do with it.
So I went and did the other thing. Corporate, at some of the biggest companies in the country, Apple included. Six years in, I knew that wasn’t for me either. I didn’t want to be owned by a clock. I wanted to build something.
So I went back to the trade.
I started a solar company out of my living room with a credit card and a little cash. Twelve years later I sold it, doing over $35 million with over 60 employees.
Here’s what those twelve years actually felt like. Cash flow issues. People problems that became family problems. Admin work that never ended. Processes that worked but didn’t really work. Growth I couldn’t keep up with. And 97 other things.
By the time I sold, I was completely burnt out.
What stayed with me afterward wasn’t the exit. It was sitting there thinking about how much better that time could have gone, and feeling like I’d been missing something the whole way through.
Then a friend handed me a book. Traction.
I read it and got genuinely excited, because there it was. Every gap I’d felt for twelve years had a name, and most of them had a fix. One plan the whole company can repeat back to you. A meeting rhythm that catches problems while they’re still small. Clear ownership on every function and every number. A short list of numbers you actually look at each week.
Simple. Not easy. But simple.
That excitement is what I do now. I’ve run hundreds of sessions since. Weekly leadership meetings, quarterly and annual planning, coaching owners sitting exactly where I sat.
Who I work with: companies between 10 and 250 people, growing, where everything still runs through the owner. For-profit or non-profit, faith-based or not. What matters is whether you’ll do the work.
Who I don’t: anyone looking to be handed a binder.
You should get to enjoy what you’re building while you’re still building it. Not after you sell it. Not after you recover from it.
I figured that out about ten years too late. You don’t have to.
