I built the business I thought I wanted. Then I realised it was running me.
Over more than 20 years as an entrepreneur, I built three multi-million-pound retail businesses across the UK, Germany and Russia, including an international business that grew to $40m.
From the outside, it looked like success.
From the inside, it felt very different.
I was working around the clock, juggling people, priorities and problems, and carrying far too much of the business in my own head. I had built something successful, but somewhere along the way, it felt as though the business had started to own me.
My entrepreneurial journey took me through just about every stage of business growth: start-up, raising capital, international expansion, an IPO, a buy-back and, ultimately, a successful trade sale.
And then, after I had exited, I discovered EOS®.
My reaction was immediate:
“Where was this when I was running my businesses?”
Here was a simple, practical way to tackle so many of the challenges I had spent years trying to figure out for myself.
How do you get everyone aligned around one vision?
How do you get the right people in the right seats?
How do you create real accountability?
How do you stop talking around the same issues and actually solve them?
And, perhaps most importantly, how do you build a great business without it all depending on you?
I wished I’d had EOS when I was building my businesses. I couldn’t go back and change my own journey—but I could help other entrepreneurs change theirs.
So that’s what I decided to do.
I was personally trained by Gino Wickman, creator of EOS and author of Traction, and since then I’ve helped more than 100 entrepreneurial businesses and their leadership teams implement EOS.
Today, I work with ambitious leadership teams who have built successful businesses but know things could be better. They want more clarity, more accountability, better execution and fewer issues following them from one meeting to the next. They want to scale, increase shareholder value and, for some, prepare the business for a future exit.
Most of all, they want the business to work without everything having to go through them.
I understand that because I’ve lived it.
I know what it feels like to grow quickly, raise capital, work with investors, lead teams across different countries, make difficult people decisions and lie awake thinking about the problems nobody else seems to see.
That experience shapes how I work with my clients today.
I’m direct. I ask difficult questions. I don’t let leadership teams hide from the real issues. I create the space for open and honest conversations, and I help teams turn those conversations into decisions, accountability and action.
Because building a successful business is one thing.
Building a successful business that gives you freedom is something else entirely.
My goal is to give entrepreneurs the tools I wish I’d had—so they can build stronger teams, more valuable businesses and companies that thrive without depending on them.
