You’ve Made a Hiring Mistake

Maybe I haven’t done enough to support them”.

I’ve heard this hundreds of times in my career as a leader, consultant and facilitator. I may have even said it a few times myself.

Only in the rarest of instances is it true.

This thought comes at that moment when you finally realize that one of your employees isn’t pulling their weight and the rest of the team is suffering because of it. It’s the same employee who is the main subject of most of your internal conversations, taking up far too much of your time. The exact employee who is nice, and you so badly want them to be successful, but they haven’t excelled in the role since day 1.

So why are you settling?

“The moment you feel the need to tightly manage someone, you’ve made a hiring mistake”

Jim Collins shared this invaluable nugget in his book – Good to Great over 20 years ago. It hasn’t aged a bit.

It’s a harsh statement, I know. But it is the truth. And it isn’t a judgement on the person’s character.

If that employee can’t be great at their job, then they don’t have a bright future at your company. So aren’t you holding them back from finding a place where they can be great?

Are you putting a greater burden on your superstars by keeping weaker employees around?

Are you sacrificing your vision in order to avoid an uncomfortable situation?

As a leader and manager, it is important to set clear goals and expectations, manage performance and remove obstacles for your team. You need to be great at leading and managing, but you shouldn’t have to hold anyone’s hand.

If they aren’t exceeding your expectations for the role, you’ve probably made a hiring mistake.
