The Importance of Planning Season
As we enter planning season, when entrepreneurial optimism meets the pessimism of constrained resources and economic outlooks. Whether your planning takes the form of a 50-page document or a note on a holiday cocktail napkin, what matters most is that you have a plan.
Why Planning Matters
My clients often dedicate two days to align on 5-7 key goals for the year, a plan for the quarter, and to build team trust (a critical piece of the puzzle). This time isn’t about creating a detailed execution plan—that’s for your departments to tackle later. It’s about establishing a shared understanding of where the business is heading.
Getting Everyone on Board
Once you have a plan, you need to make sure it is shared by everyone in the company. As Lewis Carroll wisely said, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” Clear goals ensure that your team is aligned and focusing their efforts on achieving shared objectives. The alternative is scattering focus on short-term tasks, which ultimately derails progress.
Next Steps
Once you’ve outlined your goals, don’t stop there. Keep the momentum going with regular quarterly and weekly check-ins to maintain accountability and discipline.
What’s Your Plan?
Take a minute to reflect on your planning process from last year. What worked? What didn’t work? How will you ensure everyone is on the same path this year?
