Watching Game Film – On the Field and in Business

I love college football.

As a lifelong University of South Carolina Gamecock fan (yes, I know — that’s a tough existence), I can’t wait for South Carolina Football Saturdays. I crank up the smoker, work on the pregame spread, and then jump up and down, screaming at the TV for three hours. When I’m done, I’ll even watch the post game press conference. For me, that’s where the game ends.  For the coaching staff, it’s where the next week begins.

Win or lose, every college football coach watches film after the game to analyze their performance.

Did we run the right plays?

Did we have the right players on the field?

Could we have communicated with the team better?

This typically happens the day after the game. The coaches then meet with the team and use that film review to learn, improve, and give themselves a better chance to win next week.

The Business Version of “Watching Film”

Businesses are no different. Every year – and every quarter – leadership teams set revenue goals, decide on key initiatives, communicate plans to the team, and set out to win the game of business.

Some quarters are better than others. What matters most is taking time to review, learn, and make adjustments so you can perform even better next time.

How We Do It in EOS

At EOS, we help our clients review the game film every quarter and once a year.

We talk about revenue and profit goals: Did we hit our numbers for the year? If not, why?

Did we achieve our Rocks for the quarter? What worked? What didn’t?

Just like with game film, we’re there to hold our clients accountable for what they said they were going to do – and, most importantly, to help them learn. And to become better predictors.

What happened last quarter that needs to be fixed in the next one?

Do we have the right people in the right seats? What projects do we need to focus on to fix our biggest issues?

And when we’re done, we walk out of that room with a game plan for the next quarter (and the next year).

Your Turn

If you’re leading a business, don’t skip your game film. Take time each quarter to pause, review, and reflect. Celebrate the wins, own the losses, and learn from both.

That’s how great teams – and great companies – get better every season.

If you’d like help running your own “film review” and creating a clear game plan for the next quarter, let’s talk.

That’s exactly what we do every day with business owners who are serious about winning.
