I’ve worked with a lot of Visionaries over the years. Smart, passionate, creative humans who can see possibilities long before anyone else can. They’re quick thinkers, fast movers, & brilliant at connecting dots most people don’t even realise exist.
But there’s one thing I see over & over again… something I’ve experienced myself as a business owner… something that derails teams faster than a dodgy suspension on a fast car.
It’s what I call the Visionary Blur.
It’s that moment when the Visionary gets excited, talks at speed, throws out ten new ideas before lunch, then casually drops another one in a meeting the next day.
Nothing malicious. Nothing intentional. Just enthusiasm meeting zero filters.
The problem?
Everyone else is left thinking:
“Hang on… which idea were we meant to be following?”
“Are we still doing the thing from Tuesday or is that dead now?”
“What’s the priority? Does anyone know?”
I’ve seen teams running flat-out in opposite directions simply because they’re trying to keep up with a Visionary’s brain that never switches off.
When I First Spotted the Blur
I still remember the turning point. A client session years ago, working with a founder who had more ideas per hour than most people have in a month. The team were exhausted. Not because they weren’t capable, but because the goalposts shifted every week.
He genuinely didn’t realise the impact.
To him, “just an idea” wasn’t a directive.
To them, it absolutely was.
That was the day I made it my mission to help Visionaries keep their spark while protecting their teams from whiplash.
What Visionary Blur Looks Like in the Wild
If you’ve ever worked with or been a Visionary, you’ll recognise these signs:
- You casually mention a thought in a meeting & three people immediately start rewriting plans
- Your team hesitates to commit to anything because they’re waiting for the “next idea”
- Everyone nods in the meeting, then leaves confused because they all heard different things
- You get frustrated that no one is “getting it” when actually, they’re lost in the fog
This blur slows down execution, drains energy, & kills traction.
Not because the Visionary is wrong but because the team can’t keep up.
How to Fix the Blur Without Killing the Spark
Here’s the good news. Visionary Blur isn’t a character flaw. It’s just unmanaged brilliance.
The fix is surprisingly simple.
1. Capture ideas somewhere that isn’t your team’s ears
Use a notebook, phone, document – anything. Get it out of your head without firing it like a shotgun into the weekly meeting.
2. Review ideas on a rhythm
Weekly. Fortnightly. Whatever works. The rhythm is the magic. It stops the constant “new thing!” interruptions.
3. Choose one or two priorities & commit
The moment you stop chasing ten things, the whole business exhales with relief.
4. Communicate with clarity – one message, one direction
If you’ve changed your mind, say it outright. If you haven’t, reinforce the direction. Clarity is kindness.
Why This Matters
Businesses don’t struggle because of a lack of ideas.
They struggle because of a lack of consistent direction.
Visionaries provide the spark.
But traction comes from clarity, consistency, & the discipline to focus on what matters right now.
When those two come together, everything starts to hum.
The blur disappears.
Teams move faster.
The whole company feels lighter.
And the Visionary gets to do what they do best – without accidentally derailing the week.
