Finish the Year Strong with Rocks

It’s easy for leadership teams to get caught up in everything that needs to get done.

There are projects to finish, issues to solve, and new ideas everyone wants to pursue. The problem is, when you’re trying to do too much at once, the most important things can get pushed aside.

That’s where Rocks come in.

Focus on What Matters Most

In EOS®, Rocks are the 3–7 most important priorities a leadership team commits to accomplishing over the next 90 days.

The idea is simple: Instead of trying to do everything, get clear on what matters most and make sure those things get done.

Your team might need to finish a major project, improve a process, hire for an important position, or solve an issue that’s been hanging around too long.

Whatever the priorities are, everyone needs to agree on them.

If your leadership team isn’t aligned on what matters most, it’s tough to get everyone moving in the same direction.

Rocks Need Accountability

Setting Rocks is one thing. Getting them done is another.

Each Rock needs a clear outcome, a deadline, and one person accountable for making sure it gets done.

Then you need to talk about progress regularly.

During your weekly Level 10 Meeting™, review your Rocks and determine whether they’re on track or off track. If something is off track, figure out what’s getting in the way and address it.

Don’t wait until the end of the quarter to find out a priority isn’t getting done.

Make the Next 90 Days Count

You don’t need to add more to your team’s plate. You need to make sure you’re working on the right things.

As you plan for your next quarter, ask your leadership team three questions:

  • What are the most important things we need to accomplish?
  • Who is accountable for each one?
  • Are we doing what it takes each week to get them done?

Keep the list focused, make sure everyone is on the same page, and hold each other accountable.

The goal isn’t to get everything done. It’s to get the right things done.

That’s how you build traction and make the next 90 days count.
