Sometimes relentless hustle is not ambition. It’s avoidance with a nicer outfit. Let’s figure out which one is driving you.
Ambition is a beautiful thing. It built your business. I want to show you a darker side of ambition we’ll call it the shadow, because it fools a lot of good owners.
The shadow…appears when we’re constantly busy, chasing the next thing, grinding…sometimes we’re not actually driving toward something. We’re running away from something. The activity is not necessarily ambition. It is avoidance. And it is very hard to tell the two apart while it’s happening, because they look identical. Both are exhausting and feel like dedication.
So how can you tell? Ask yourself, what happens when you stop. When you sit still, when there is no fire to fight and no task to chase, what comes up? For a lot of owners, what comes up is discomfort. Questions they don’t want to face. Is this even the business I want? Am I happy? Is my marriage okay? Did I build the right thing? Am I enough if I am not producing?
Staying busy is a very effective way to avoid having to answer those questions. If you are always in motion, you never have to sit in the discomfort. The business becomes a place to hide. A respectable, profitable, socially approved place to hide, but a hiding place all the same.
I’m not saying this is you. But I am asking you to check in with yourself. Because herein lies the problem. You cannot build a business that gives you the life you want if you’re using it to avoid looking at your life. The avoidance keeps you busy on the wrong things, In the weeds, because the weeds are comfortable, because they mean you never have to lift your head and ask the big questions.
Getting your mind right means turning and facing the thing you have been outrunning. Being willing to sit in the quiet long enough to get honest with yourself. What do I actually want? Not what I am supposed to want or what looks good. What do I want this business to do for my actual life?
That’s a scary question for a lot of people. Especially if you’ve been in business for years and your still struggling. To be clear…the struggle is part of it, but it’s not all of it. The owners who get free are the ones who finally stop running long enough to ask. Because you cannot redesign a life you refuse to look at.
This brings us to the biggest question of all, and to the next article. What does freedom actually mean to you? Not in general… specifically. Let’s define it.
