Episode 4 – The Identity Trap: You Are the Business

Read time: ~2 min | Goal: Expose the identity fusion that makes owners protect the very trap they complain about.

If your business needs you for everything, here is a hard question. Do you actually want it any other way? This one gets personal.

This is the video most business coaches will not make, because it is not about tactics. It is about you.

Here’s something I’ve seen over and over. An owner says they desperately want freedom. They want the business to run without them. They want their nights and weekends back. And then you watch what they actually do, and they keep pulling everything back to themselves. They insert themselves into decisions that don’t need them. They make sure they’re still the one with all the answers.

Why would you say you want freedom and then quietly protect the cage? Because somewhere along the way, being needed became part of who you are.

Think about it. For years, the business has been your identity. It’s how you know that you matter. It’s structure, status, your sense of being essential. When you walk into that office, you are the one everyone turns to and that feels good. That’s your drug….your addiction.

So a business that doesn’t need you can feel less like freedom and more like who am I if they don’t need me?

You can’t escape a trap you’re secretly invested in keeping. If part of your significance is wrapped up in being the hero of your business, you will unconsciously keep being the hero, even as you complain about the cape stangling you.

Here’s the reframe that changes everything. Right now, your identity is being the person who does it all. Trade that in for a bigger identity: the person who builds something that thrives without them. That’ s a harder, more impressive thing to build. Anyone can make themselves necessary. It takes a real leader to make themselves unnecessary, on purpose, while things keep growing.

The goal was never to not matter. It’s to matter in a different way. To go from being the busiest person in the room the one who built it so well it does not need you all the time. That’s not loss. That’s the whole point. But it requires you to loosen your grip on an old version of yourself, and start by being honest that the grip even exists.

Next, we are going to get honest about the difference between ambition and avoidance. Because sometimes all that hard work is hiding something.
