I started my first real business at 13, with the singular goal of buying corduroys to impress the eighth-grade girls. I was wrong about the corduroys. But it started a drive that led me to found three more businesses and to acquire, turn around, and grow more than 20 others across nearly two decades.

For most of that time, I believed great organizations were the product of great processes. So I built them. My playbooks now run in more than 100 companies, and they helped. But there was always this nagging thing that slowed us down and drained the energy out of good teams. I could feel it but couldn’t name it. So I did what most driven leaders do: I worked harder and hoped I’d eventually figure it out.

Working harder was never the answer. I finally saw it when an acquisition introduced me to EOS®. My playbooks had optimized nearly everything except the one thing that actually ties a business together. Truly aligned people. We created more clarity and momentum in 90 days than we had the entire prior year, and people were genuinely happier. It transformed the business. It changed my life.

That’s the conviction I bring now: a business is only as strong as its people. But great people aren’t enough on their own. The best teams I’ve seen were full of talent pulling in different directions, until they got aligned. That’s what separates the companies that thrive from the ones that just survive.
